Skills

If you’ve got messy data or you’re in a hard season, there’s a door here for you.

Three doors.
All of them open the same way.

  • Data stewardship

If your team has numbers that do not agree, I can help you work out which one is right. Usually that means digging into where the data comes from, then writing rules that catch the errors before anyone builds on them. I did this for four years on a bank’s data team and cleaned up over 100 failing quality rules.

  • Data analysis

If you have the data and nobody has had time to sit with it, I can help. I write the SQL and check what is in the tables before I answer. Most of that work has been on critical data elements at a bank, where a wrong number is a regulatory problem. I usually finish with a Tableau dashboard so you can pull it yourself next time.

  • Mentoring and coaching

I am a certified Life Breakthrough coach, and I have coached athletes with intellectual disabilities since 2003. If you are trying to rebuild, I will walk with you. People further along poured into me, so I do the same.

Core values

Integrity

Above reproach

If I can’t do the job in a way I’d be comfortable walking someone through line by line, I don’t take it. That has cost me things. I’d still rather lose the work than explain away how I got it.

Stewardship

Everything is on loan

My time and my skills and my money, and the data somebody trusted me with. I manage what I’ve been handed instead of treating it like mine.

Authenticity

Same in private as in public

No masks, no dark corners, and my yes means yes. You get the same person in the interview, on the team, and on a bad week.

Intentionality

A beat behind beats confidently wrong

I think before I answer. That reads as slow if you wanted a fast reply, and it is the reason the number I hand you is one I have checked.

Discernment

Seeing what the numbers are not saying

Most bad decisions I have watched were made on data that looked fine. My job is to notice the thing that does not add up before it becomes somebody’s problem.

Care for people

Leave people better than you found them

I would rather build somebody up than just get the work done. People do their best work when somebody believes they can.

How I’m wired

I went through a stretch of trying to know myself better and took a pile of these.
Assessment Result What it means in practice
CliftonStrengths Restorative, Relator, Input, Developer, Ideation I am the person who cannot walk past a broken thing. Give me 100 failing rules and I am happier than I would be with a clean slate. The Developer part is why I keep ending up teaching, and why I liked that more than I expected to.
DISC C/SD. Cautious, then Supportive and Dominant I check the work before it ships, and I would rather find my own mistake than have you find it. The Supportive half is the part people notice second: I will hold a high bar without turning it into a fight.
Big Fivealso called OCEAN or the Five Factor Model Agreeableness 96th percentile. Enthusiasm 92nd. Neuroticism 9th. Assertiveness 31st The one with actual research behind it. When something breaks I get quieter. That is useful in a room where everyone else got louder. And I am the one people tell the truth to about their data, usually before they tell their manager.
Myers-Briggs ENFJ, the Protagonist or Teacher Called the Protagonist, though Teacher fits better. I see what someone could be good at before they do, and I am at my best on the day the thing I understand finally clicks for someone else.
